Mrs. Arlington Celebrates History

Did you know the first school integration in Virginia and the first lunch counter sit-in in Northern Virginia were both in Arlington’s Cherrydale neighborhood?

Snip20180604_64This Saturday, June 9, these events and more will be commemorated during the Kick Off Celebration of Cherrydale Neighborhood’s 125th Anniversary at Cherrydale Library.

At 10:30 a.m., a plaque will be unveiled at 3815 Lee Highway (site of today’s Hair Vogue) memorializing the Cherrydale Drug Fair lunch-counter sit-in of June 9, 1960.

Snip20180604_63At 11:00 a.m., the ceremony commemorating Cherrydale’s 125th anniversary will begin at Cherrydale Library. Speakers will include sit-in veteran Joan Trumpauer Mulholland. • The lunch-counter sit-in at the Cherrydale Drug Fair on June 9, 1960.
  • The contributions of the Cherrydale Volunteer Fire Department at the Pentagon fire on September 11, 2001.
